Masters and/or PhD Opportunities in Environmental Change and the Arctic
Climate change is causing the Arctic to warm at three times the rate of the global average. This is causing sea ice to recede opening up new navigational opportunities through the Arctic regions including the Northwest Passage, Northern Sea Route and Arctic Bridge. What early British and other international explorers were dreaming of in the 19th Century is now becoming a reality. This reality requires focused research attention in order to understand the risks and opportunities that are emerging.
Dr. Jackie Dawson, Director of the Environment, Society, and Policy Group (www.espg.ca) at the University of Ottawa (Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics) is seeking applications for Masters and/or PhD students to work on our latest research projects on environmental change and the Arctic with a focus on shipping, tourism, and economic development. The Environment, Society and Policy Group (ESPG) is an interdisciplinary research group conducting policy–focused research in partnership with government (including Inuit government), industry, and Arctic communities.
The student(s) awarded with the funded position(s) will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with, and receive mentorship from the ESPG team on several Arctic climate change projects. The team includes Dr. Jackie Dawson (CRC I), two Research Associates, three Postdoctoral Fellows, and several PhD and Masters’ students.
The student will receive funding in the form or Research Assistantships in the amount of $10,000-$15,000 per year at the Masters’ level, or $12,000-18,000 per year at the PhD level. This funding is in addition to admissions scholarships offered by the University of Ottawa to students or other opportunities that will emerge during the program. Students will also be eligible for field work and conference funds in support of their research and scholarly development.
If you are interested in the position(s), please email Dr. Jackie Dawson (jackie.dawson@uottawa.ca) and include a current CV and short note outlining your research area(s) interest.
Please note that only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
